Straps for the Fuel Cell
I built some sweet looking straps for the new fuel cell today. Originally I had a 25 gallon fuel cell but after seeing other cars at the 2016 SCORE Baja 1000, I decided to shrink down to a 16 gallon fuel cell.
CV Joint Upgrades
VW Bug cv joints keep the wheels turning as the car soaks up the bumps. Most people upgrade them to "type 2" CV joints which are the ones found on the classic Volkswagan Van or Bus. Turns out Type II joints move about 22 degrees. Type IV are the same size as the Type II but move 27 degrees. Using Type IV joints means my axles can move 5 degrees more than the typical upgrade. They Type IV joints were used on the station wagon (Type IV), the VW Thing (Type 181) and several Porsche models like 928, 944 and others.

Building the Roll Cage
My son helped build the first pass on creating the main hoop of the cage. My respect for guys who fabricate race buggy's and other race car cages has gone way up - this is complicated stuff - and DOM tubing is pretty unforgiving.

Mounting the Seats
Finally decided to get my seats from PRP. Living in Texas means that I'm living miles from any real population of desert racers. As such, I've never actually even sat in any off-road seats before, so it was really tough to decide which seats to put into the adventure bug. It came down to Mastercraft or PRP. Mastercraft had a six week lead time, PRP had three weeks - my impatience made the decision.

Team H12:One has to be one of the hottest teams out there. Dennis Hollenbeck is a great guy who races for a great cause.

Floor Tubes for the Roll Cage
The chassis is finally done and I'm starting on the bottom rails which will be the foundation of the roll cage. They also tie the front suspension into the rear suspension, giving the car a solid base to confront the rigors off-road racing.

Building the Rear Droop Stops
The stock bottom stops are pretty weak and don't let the wheel go down very far. Here's how I extended them, braced them and built a pretty pimpin' set of stops.
